The Nature of Intimacy

2023

This micro-short was made for a class focused on myths, legends, and fairy tales. I was inspired by the story of Sköll, the wolf from Norse mythology, who chased the sun, Sol, across the sky. I linked the masculine predatory themes to a beautiful poem by Mia Nem. It was a wonderful practice in paper silhouette animation, which was inspired by the groundbreaking Lotte Reiniger. It was a difficult and meditative process that ultimately inspired a longer piece of the same style.

I, Carrion (Icarian)

Utilizing the same style as the project above, I created a longer work centering on Hozier’s song “I, Carrion (Icarian)”. The song is about the myth of Icarus, who famously flew too close to the sun, and I approached it as if I were Icarus. Instead of it being a father/son relationship, I questioned what would have happened if Icarus had been about a mother and a daughter. Having been raised by the woman I was, would I have flown too close to the sun? Or would she have raised me with better strength of will than that? The video linked below is the result of this thought process and many months spent with paper and a light table.
